Today, Ned Lamont is the only Democrat running for US Senate in Connecticut. Ned Lamont is the Democratic nominee for US Senate and will appear as such on the ballot this fall. Joe Lieberman will appear as anything but a Democrat according to CT Law:
Sec. 9-453u. (Formerly Sec. 9-378m). Reservation of party designation.
(b) The statement shall include the offices for which candidates may petition for nomination under the party designation to be reserved but shall not include an office if no elector who has signed the application is entitled to vote at an election for such office.
(c) The statement shall include the party designation to be reserved which (1) shall consist of not more than three words and not more than twenty-five letters; (2) shall not incorporate the name of any major party;
By law, Lieberman cannot run again and call himself any form of Democrat on the ballot. More on the flip...
So why is the media calling him an "independent Democrat" this morning?
Let's correct the media on their improper usage.
Hartford Courant, 8/9/06: "Larson will have to decide whom to support in November - Ned Lamont, who won the Democratic primary Tuesday, or Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who plans to run as an independent Democrat."
Joe Lieberman cannot be called Democrat on the November ballot. Contact the Hartford Courant and tell them the CT Secretary of State no longer considers Joe Lieberman a Democratic candidate and they should report the facts.
Stamford Advocate, 8/9/06: "Lieberman needs to turn in 7,500 signatures to the secretary of the state's office by today to run as an independent Democrat under the newly formed Connecticut for Lieberman Party."
Joe Lieberman cannot be called Democrat on the November ballot. Contact the Stamford Advocate and the CT Secretary of State no longer considers Joe Lieberman a Democratic candidate and they should report the facts.
Connecticut Post, 8/9/06: "But shortly after 11:20 p.m., Lieberman told cheering supporters here in that he will run as an independent Democrat in November."

Journal Inquirer, 8/9/06: "U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, denied his party's nomination for a fourth term by an antiwar candidate almost unheard of six months ago, nevertheless vowed Tuesday to seek re-election as an "independent Democrat" for "the sake of our state, our country, and my party."
It's not your party anymore, Mr. Lieberman.
Joe Lieberman cannot be called Democrat on the November ballot. Contact the Journal Inquirer and the CT Secretary of State no longer considers Joe Lieberman a Democratic candidate and they should report the facts.
Let's nip this idea that Joe Lieberman can lose a primary and somehow continue to run as a "independent Democrat" in the bud. He's running for himself, not the Democratic party. Please add any other references to Joe Lieberman as "independent Democrat" in the comments so we can shift this debate back to the facts. Ned Lamont is the Democratic nominee for Senate in Connecticut. Today he is the only Democrat in the race, by law.
