So.. with the decisive loss of Joe Leiberman last eve, will the HRC and Joe Solomnese be calling Ned lamont soon to ask for his forgiveness?
As you may recall, the DC-based Human Rights Campaign, which bills itself as "America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality," endorsed Joe Leiberman over Ned Lamont in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary in Connecticut. This despite Ned's 100% support for same-sex marriage equality and Leiberman's somewhat mixed record on issues of concern to the GLBT Community. Joe Solomnese, the HRC's President, offered a strained justification for this decision, which really came down to "Joe hasn't bashed us, and its usually a safer choice to back a well-financed incumbent over a principled challenger who actually embraces the GLBT community."
Well, the rank and file members of the HRC in Connecticut were not fooled, nor were many of its out-of-state members. I, as well as numerous members of the HRC Federal Club (Contributing $100+ per month to HRC) cancelled our memberships and choose to use these funds to support Lamont, among others.
Well, much like Joe Leiberman, Joe Solomnese in his "DC good old boys" lost touch with what his members were thinking and feeling about such an important race. The results speak for themselves.
So, Joe, will you be calling Ned Lamont soon to ask for forgiveness, and offer your support in bid to win the general election? Better to admit your error now before the HRC loses further relevance in the political discourse. I have a feeling Ned is a forgiving man.
