I am not happy with the lack of zest on the part of Democratic politicians when faced with the torture issue. We know it's wrong to torture. We know what the President wants is torture...although he calls it by some euphamism. We know that the Geneva Convention has helped regulate difficult prisoner of war situations in time of war. Why doesn't some Democratic politician or Democratic talking head put all this together in an attack format?
It is not enough to go through the logic and ethics of the situation. It sounds milquetoast when compared to the combative words of the President. The public wants some stand up, take charge rhetoric to accompany the logic and ethics.
I'd like to hear:
The President ISN'T COMPETENT enough to work with the Geneva Convention, rules civilized nations have used for over 60 years. This request to legalize tourture (and make no mistake about it, he may call it something else, but legalizing torture is what he is campaigning for) is another example of his inability to function as a responsible commander in chief.
His administration isn't wise enough, or skilled enough, or honorable enough to work within the framework of the Geneva Convention. And he excuses his shortcomings by asking for different rules. He's trying to find a way around his incompetence once again. He wants to move the goalposts because his administration can't meet the challenges of the post 9/11 era. We shouldn't rewrite rules that benefit our prisoners of war, our own soldiers, rules which enhance our standing as an ethical, honorable nation just because one incompetent person doesn't seem to be able to do his job.
