Since when is it a crime to remove trash from a dumpster??? Has this country lost its mind? (That's rhetorical, of course - we all know it never had one, lol).
Just a few miles down the road from me, some "hippies", I suppose, (since they were Rainbow clan) were hungry, and decided to eat some produce from a dumpster:
"We didn't have any intention of committing a crime or doing anything wrong," Charle told the Steamboat Pilot & Today newspaper. "We had just come in town and we were prepared to buy groceries from a store but everything was closed."
Yikes!
Giles Charle, 24, of Sumersworth, N.H., and David Siller, 27, of Wayne, Pa., said the punishment was harsh and the only choice they had to avoid a felony on their records.
They were on their way to the Rainbow Family's annual gathering when they were arrested in June and charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft. Authorities said they took five cucumbers, four or five apricots, two bundles of asparagus spears and a handful of cherries from a garbage can at Sweet Pea Produce.
Woweee!! This is just unbelievable to me! Does anyone else think this is crazy?? I thought felonies were for thefts of $500 or more - since when are a few cucumbers and apricots worth $500? (Asparagus and cherries notwithstanding).
They probably can't afford to appeal, but they should. This is one of the absolutely most ridiculous stories I have heard in a while.
Since I live close, I was going to call the Sweet Pea Produce company, but could not find their number anywhere (and there is a Sweet Pea Tours in Steamboat - I called him, not related), so if anyone has their number I'd like to call and give them a piece of my mind (what there is left of it, lol).
Geez. Unbelievable!
UPDATE: I just called the store, and they hung up on me after informing me that the men actually broke into the store.... FYI
