New
research shows that adult stem cells do little or nothing for repairing damaged hearts.
The modest results suggest more study is needed -- and, some scientists say, demonstrate the need to lift political limits on using cells from embryos, which offer more promise for turning into heart-repairing tissue.
"The optimal cell type has not been discovered yet," said Dr. Kenneth Chien, director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cardiovascular Research Center, who had no role in the studies.
Chien said experiments in various laboratories over the past 15 years suggest embryonic stem cells show they can turn into beating cardiac muscle, though it has not been tried in human patients. "This is an area worthy of further pursuit," he said.
Unfortunately, Bush's fanatical position on embryonic stem cell research is hurting the pursuit of science; science which can and will help people recover from damage caused by cardiac arrest. Bush is knowingly allowing people to suffer, much like how he ignored the plight of the Hurricane Katrina survivors until political pressure forced him to pay attention.
I am not the only one who sees this.
The Bush Administration has restricted research that involves the destruction of embryos. But Schwartz and others said the three new studies illustrate the need to pursue embryonic stem cell research.
The sad thing is, the embryos are going to be destroyed anyway. People who are utilizing fertilization clinics make more embryos than they use. What happens to the remaining embryos? They are discarded.
The Bush Administration is unethical in their position, they restrict life-saving research because it destroys embryos that would be destroyed anyway. Their position causes unreasonable, increased suffering in this world. Hence, the Bush Administration is evil.
