Georgia's new photo ID voting law that is supposed to protect our ballot boxes? Well, it also changed the law so that dead people can legally vote by absentee ballot. And at no time does the dead person ever need to show an ID!
Jay Bookman of the AJC explains:
And yes, HB 244 allows dead people to vote. Under previous law, if someone voted via absentee ballot but died before Election Day, that vote wouldn't be counted. But no longer. HB 244 struck that language, so that today, the votes of dead Georgians still count.
No ID of any kind is needed in Georgia to register to vote. You can register by mail using the photocopy of a utility bill, bank statement or paycheck. Who could not fake one of those on a copy machine?
Then to vote you get an absentee ballot, fill it out and mail it back in. You don't even need an excuse to vote by absentee ballot, like you may be out of town, getting surgery or something. You can just do it because you feel like it.
It is now also legal for groups like the Christian Coalition to distribute absentee ballots stapled to lists of candidates you should vote for. Right wing groups can not only give you the ballot, but they can tell you who to vote for at the same time.
Why would Georgia make voter fraud easier by absentee ballot and make it harder to vote in person? Again Bookman explains:
Perhaps because Democrats tend to vote in person, while Republicans rely more heavily on absentee ballots. By making it more difficult to vote in person, they would discourage Democrats from voting and thus win more elections.
This stuff should be illegal! Read the whole column!
