I have a suggestion for a rebuttal to a common Republican sneer I seem to hear more and more often. It's one of those unanswerable questions meant to make Democrats seem clueless:
'...well, what is the Democrat plan for Iraq? Huh? What? Huh? No plan? Huh?' or something along those lines.
This evening it struck me as an epiphany, and I think it makes enough sense for Democrats and liberals to use as a perfectly sound rebuttal...I even test drove it in a conversation tonight when the topic came up, and it sure make this Republican I was talking to STFU right away.
The reply when asked "So, what is the Democratic Party's plan for Iraq and how to fix it?" is almost too simplistic, but remember who are audience is, we have to keep the answers simple.
As a sidenote, I have to say I think this is one of the dumber arguments out there by right-wingers. For whatever reason though it seems to be gaining in popularity. It's one step short of admitting that the whole thing is a freakin' mess without coming out and saying it.
My reply to the question tonight was this:
We can't have a plan until we have full accountability. Until we go back a few steps and clarify exactly what got us into this mess, can we properly ascertain the correct action in Iraq. In other words before we can clearly plan for the future, we need to clarify some mysteries in our immediate past.
Now if this seems like scapegoating (or if some Republican thug calls it such) back it up with a couple hard facts.
- Part II of the 9/11 commission was never conducted. It was killed in committee by Republicans.
- Investigation into the faulty intelligence vaunted as fact was never conducted.
- Of what the commission what able to probe, tells a completely different story from what the Bush Regime has been saying.
Only with that history properly investigated and correctly recorded will we be able to paint the fullest picture of this dire situation. If only we can clearly see what true events really got us here, can we then define what to do next. We will have a plan to resolve the Iraq quagmire once we have some accountability from the White House.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
