Here's an idea: If (god forbid) the Republicans retain control of the Congress this November, every Democrat in the House and Senate should switch parties and become Republicans.
And every Democrat, Independent and progressive out here in the rest of the country should reregister as a Republican.
As bad as one-party rule is, a one-party system might be just the ticket.
Imagine, progressive Republicans getting committee chairmanships (seniority counts) -- right now -- not next time we rise to power. Imagine, subpoena power -- right now! The ability to vote for the leadership with no restrictions on which "party" they're part of.
Imagine being unable to label a whole bunch of people unpatriotic or weak on terror just because of the party they belong to.
Imagine having to vote for candidates based on who they are, what they say and what they do, and an end to this idiotic, my party right or wrong b.s.
Yep, we can have liberal Republicans, progressive Republicans, middle-of-the-road Republicans, neo-conservative Republicans, evangelical Republicans...it's a big tent -- everybody's welcome!
Instead of this need to create hard lines and partisan divides, Congress would move gently from side to side, like a swing in a light breeze, adapting to the nuances that truly are the interests of the American people.
What do you say? Is it finally time for the one-party system? And if our elected Democratic representatives just decided to go ahead and do it, who's going to stop them?
