As I understand it, the Congress is going to take up taxcuts early in 2006. Democrats and progressives need to start pushing the theme of "no taxcuts until there is a balanced budget." There are several reasons why I like this theme which are explained on the flip side.
- Most Americans support the idea of a balanced budget. Therefore the idea that there shouldn't be taxcuts until the budget is balanced will strike them as reasonable.
- Republicans are trying to shift the focus to Federal spending and ignore the consequences taxcuts have on the Federal deficit. This argument focuses on the revenue side of the deficit equation.
- A Democrat who says that there shouldn't be taxcuts until the Federal budget is balanced is fighting a Republican on our battlefield, not the Republicans.
