At the end of March I wrote a diary,
2006 The Democratic Perfect Storm is Here Featuring Jack Carter the Next Senator from Nevada, outlining the potential of Jack Carter's race for Nevada Senator. The Carter campaign is making their final push to take this seat from the Republicans and a quick google search shows they are earning their free media and getting their message out to Nevada voters on why we need Jack Carter in the Senate.
We need Jack Carter in the Senate because we need intelligent people in the Senate. Jack has a degree in physics and he has a law degree. He passed the bar on his first attempt. Do I really need to go into why we need smart people in the Senate.
We need Jack Carter in the Senate because he believes in science. I repeat, Jack has a degree in physics. Too often we have seen Republicans assault science, believing that if they ignore things like global warming it will go away.
We need Jack Carter in the Senate not just because he is intelligent but because he grew up in rural Georgia. For more than 100 years the Democratic party has been a party that has been behind the family farmer. From William Jennings Bryan and his famous Cross of Gold speech to FDR's price supports and Democratic support for sustainable agriculture, Democrats have worked to help the family farm against giant agribusiness and unfeeling corporate policies. Unfortunately, the rural voter has not been supportive of the party that supports them. As someone who grew up working with farmers, grew up in a rural community, worked in a rural community, was educated in a rural community, Jack is someone who knows how to relate to rural voters.
We need Jack Carter in the Senate because he is a veteran who served in Vietnam. We need him not because he served a tour in Vietnam and his experiences will help him relate to the situation in Iraq and the vets who are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan but because those who serve in the military particularly in combat are exposed to different people from different backgrounds. They meet people out of their socio-economic background, people who come from different places and have different ideas. We need Senators who know more than the country club set. We need Senators who know people who have lived different lives.
We need Jack Carter in the Senate because he believes in the Constitution. He recently said,
I consider myself to be a constitutionalist and what that means is basically two things," Jack Carter said. "One, I don't think the federal government protects me, I think the Constitution protects me, and often it protects me against the federal government. What that means is personal freedoms are extremely important and the freedom of religion has got to be one regardless of what religion it happens to be.
We need Jack Carter because he says,
I tell people I'm a Democrat because Democrats are for the working men and women in this country and Republicans are not,
We need Jack Carter in the Senate because he is not an egotistical son of a ......gun. When I listen to Jack Carter speak one of the things that strikes me is the lack of pretension. He just says what he thinks. He is straightforward and seems to be someone who is willing to listen to other people's ideas.
We need Jack Carter in the Senate, well I admit I would love to see him in the Senate in order to give the right wing apoplexy. That's right. Jack is not his father but you wouldn't know that by the way the wingers act. They have transferred their hatred for President Carter to soon to be Senator Carter. I would love to see the reaction of the wingers on election night when Jack wins. Let's face it, their heads would explode.
We need Jack Carter in the Senate because Democrats need the Senate. Even in the best of circumstances it is difficult to get all of the Democrats standing together. 2007 and 2008 will be difficult years for a Democratic Senate if we have a number of Senators running for President. Sometimes a Senator's ambition will override their good sense. The more Democratic Senators we have the less likely it will be that Democrats will need 100% of our Democratic Senators voting together especially on less popular bills.
We need Jack Carter in the Senate because we need to get Sarah R. Carter thinking about becoming a Senator or Congressperson or President. While the idea of a political dynasty may seem really bad in light of the current occupant of the White House, Democrats have been well served throughout history by families with a real commitment to public service. The Roosevelts, Kennedys, and Rockefellers come easily to mind.
It is up to the Carter campaign to aggressively go after Ensign in these final weeks until November. Should they go after Ensign and get voters to move into the undecided column from Ensign then we will see good things on election night. In the 1994 Republican tidal wave, 8 of 10 undecided voters broke for the Republicans. With the state of the nation and Nevada I believe we will see a blue Nevada in November.
Please give generously to the Jack Carter campaign and make it the anvil around the Senate Republican's figurative neck.
