Interesting AP article:

While the opposition to this latest redundant anti-gay initiative set to appear on the Wisconsin ballot in November may be better organized than ususal(perhaps due to the fact that it targets not only gay marriage, but domestic partner benefits, as well), Most polls, though, indicate that it's gonna pass, as will a strictly advisory pro death penalty referendum. On the other hand, fairly liberal Democratic Gov. Doyle looks set to win re-election, despite the fact that he is strongly against the anti-gay measure and has
pledged to veto any bill legalizing capital punishment. Obviously, if he is reelected, Doyle will have gotten votes from many people who voted for the death penalty and anti-gay measures.
I've lived in Wisconsin for most of my adult life, and have always scratched my head over its political climate. This is the state that gave us both Bob LaFollette and Joe McCarthy. The state that bounced Gaylord Nelson in favor of Bob Kasten, who was then bounced in favor of Russ Feingold.
A state that is happy with two quite liberal U.S Senators, but whose own state chambers are dominated by right wing nutjobs. A state in which a large chunk of the electorate voted for both Bush and Feingold in 2004(Feinold won handily, while Kerry took WI by a four digit margin).
My quesion is this: Why is politics in Wisconsin so weird?
