I'm curious: would you become an American citizen if you were not already one? Or, alternatively, if you are not now an American citizen, are you tempted to consider moving here and becoming one?
The flip side of this, of course, is if you are now an American citizen, have you considered emigrating somewhere else?
Before the 2000 election, I would never have considered this to be a serious question. But over the six years of the Bush administration, as I have watched the country I love degenerate and descend into international pariah-hood, I have on several occasions been tempted to consider emigrating to Europe. However, it takes a lot to pack up, pick up, and leave your native country and move into another culture, and while I have been tempted to emigrate, I haven't taken any serious steps in that direction.
But I think that it is a healthy exercise to turn the question around, and ask myself whether I would, today, come to the US and seek citizenship. And I have to say that I seriously doubt it (depending on my situation in my putative home country, of course). And I think that says a lot.
So, once again, would you become an American? Take the poll, and give your reasons in comments, if you are so inclined.
