Although I made a promise to myself to never waste time writing another diary, I figured this was too important and hopefully this message gets out.
I read Feingold's diary about a week ago on his own legislation that he plans on presenting to the Senate and despite some good questions he didn't return to answer them. Well, I watched the clip from C&L linked by a FPer which showed Feingold's interview on Countdown and listening carefully to his speech I've finally got the answer I've been waiting to hear from a Senator (not surprisingly, the first one to have the balls to say it was Feingold).
When discussing his legislation he mentioned the 6 month time frame, he mentioned the importance of public pressure on elected representatives, but most importantly he said this:
"The way to enforce it in my bill, is to simply say the funding is no longer there at the end."
What he’s saying, and I’m sure no one here needs me to spell it out, is threat of veto or filibuster will be retaliated with cutting off of the funding. That’s the ‘Feingold nuclear option’. People compain about how they want the U.S. out of Iraq. They want the war stopped. They want Bush stopped. Feingold is giving us the ability to make that happen. He’s putting up. Now it’s time for all of us to do our part and pressure our Senators to approve Feingold’s resolution. ACTION, and BREAKING diaries get posted ad nauseum here but if there’s ever a time for action or a more important subject to GET ACTIVE ON it’s this one. You want the Iraq war to end? This is a real way! The biggest obstacle as he spelled out in that interview is that a lot of Senators voted FOR this war and they’re afraid to admit it was a mistake. That means they need pressure. That’s where all of us come in! Of course, Feingold is one of my Senators so I don’t need to pressure him, but you can bet your ass I’m gonna contact Herb Kohl! I’m sure he supports Feingold too but he’s still gonna hear from me anyway! And he's gonna keep hearing from me until he tells me the answer I want to hear.
If you don’t do your part to contact your Senators about supporting this upcoming bill, then you can no longer cry about how there’s nothing being done about the Iraq war.
Sorry this wasn't longer but I think it meets minimum diary requirements. Plus if this falls off the front page 10 minutes from now with no comments and no recs at least I didn't waste an entire weekend writing.
