Take a look at this.
Legislation introduced in Tennessee would require death certificates for aborted fetuses, which likely would create public records identifying women who have abortions.
I am almost too disturbed and pissed off to comment on this right now. Fortunately, even my anti-abortion Republican friends are disgusted by this blatant attack on pregnant women. The purpose – to identify and terrorize patients – is as transparent as it is vile.
Rep. Stacey Campfield, a Republican, said his bill would provide a way to track how many abortions are performed.
Campbell is lying of course:
The number of abortions reported to the state Office of Vital Records is already publicly available. The office collects records — but not death certificates — on abortions and the deaths of fetuses after 22 weeks gestation or weighing about 1 pound.
The identities of the women who have abortions are not included in those records, but death certificates include identifying information such as Social Security numbers.
I don’t even know where to begin on how truly sinister and disturbing this bill is.
Republicans control the State Senate, so expect it to pass with great fanfare. Democrats control the State House – although enough of them are from rural, "Christian" districts that they may trust the governor to veto it (or force the Supreme Court, state or federal, to strike it down). I trust Governor Phil Bredesen to block this from becoming law if our state legislators have not the wisdom, courage, or compassion to do the right thing.
