So now the MD legislature is trying to pass a bill that enables illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition. The reason that I am writing about this issues is because I am angered by the proposal. It seems to be an insult to hard-working Marylanders, who play by the rules, and pay their taxes.
More beneath the fold.
UPDATE: Per request this article highlights the controversy
I often talk about Reagan Democrats and why the white working class left the Party in the 1970s and the 1980s. This is the perfect type of issue that illustrates my point.
There was a thread posted earlier today that focused on the subject of White Privilege. I found the original post to be somewhat patronizing, but it brought up an issue that I will discuss further here. Just imagine if you are from a family in Maryland who has worked hard, played by the rules, and then have to be told by those on the left that illegal immigrants should receive in-state tuition?
Of course, according to some here, to automatically oppose this initiative is to be "racist". But one can oppose this initiative and not be racist. See, though, this is the type of thinking on the left that bothers me. They think that it is okay for Marylanders to spend their tax money to allow illegal immigrants in-state tuition at the University of Maryland.
But to the working class family, the prototypical "Reagan Democrat" family, this comes off as an insult. They have worked hard their whole lives, played by the rules, yet now are expected to support giving what amounts to be scholarships to illegals who have broken the law to come to the United States.
See, I find this proposal to be unfair. It's an insult to those in Maryland who have worked hard. It's an insult to Marylanders who play by the rules, pay their taxes, and stay within the boundaries of the law.
