Bush will veto the Iraq War supplemental bill by tomorrow. All the pundits are guessing what will happen next. Although Congress has been a little more bold lately, no one is willing to take dramatic steps to end this war. Republicans are still trying to frame this issue as "Democrats do not support the troops."
Although the American people are tired of this war, no one is taking to the streets in serious, continuous numbers. I think this is because the war does not affect most people directly. Short of a draft, the general public will continue to live with this war without serious dissent.
I think a way to end this war is through taxes. The Congress should give Bush every dollar he wants for this war--including no time tables. In exchange, Congress should levy a 1% "war tax" on all goods sold in the U.S. I do realize that this could be a suicide mission for Democrats; however, if framed correctly, this could be devasting to Republicans. Congress can say "we can no longer afford to borrow money from China and Japan to fund this war. So we are now asking the American people to make a sacrifice for the troop." Americans did nothing but sacrifice for WWII troops so this is not a new concept.
Please understand, I do not want any more taxes as I am taxed enough. This tax would peronalize the war. The general public would no longer be disconnected from Iraq because they would be reminded of the war with every purchase they make. It would not take long before there were massive protests around the country. Everyone would want to bring the troops home. As proved with Vietnam, an unpopular war can end with massive, continous protests.
If anyone is in agreement with this, call your congressman. If you are in disagreement, I'm sure I'll hear from you in the comments.
