Native American societies used shaming to enforce their cultural mores and codes – those who transgressed were ostracized. Now, the University of Massachusetts has shown how shaming the war hucksters and liars of the Bush Administration should work.
President Bush's former chief of staff Andrew Card was loudly booed by hundreds of students and faculty members as he rose to accept an honorary degree at the University of Massachusetts on Friday.
The boos and catcalls - including those from faculty members who stood onstage with Card - drowned out Provost Charlena Seymour's remarks as she awarded the honorary doctorate in public service.
See? Outside of the American Legion halls, the right-wing churches, the military bases and the boardrooms – out here in real America – members of the Bush regime will be treated like the war criminals that they are. (Flip...)
Let them suffer the shame of their bloodlust, their deceit, their incompetence and their cynicism.
...many of the faculty members onstage joined the three- to four- minute outburst.
One faculty member onstage held a sign: "Card - no honor, no degree." Another sign said, "War criminals go home."
This is how the public will now and forever receive the lot of these fiasco-makers. Perhaps they’ll never languish in a U.S. jail or see the dock of the international criminal court, but Card and Co. should feel the scorn the real American public holds for their so called "public service."
Afterward [Card] ignored a reporter's question about the protesters. "It was a great honor and a privilege to be here," he said.
No, Andy, the pleasure was all ours.
