Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell vetoed bill that would have allowed people with certain serious illnesses to use marijuana, saying it was fraught with problems and sent a mixed message to children.
Well, I was pinning my hopes that Connecticut would become the 13th state to join the slow but growing list of states passing legislation allowing sick individuals with serious medical conditions such as cancer and AIDS to purchase marijuana with the written permission from an M.D.
The governor herself is a breast cancer survivor, no less. But she caves in, saying it's up to the federal government to make the call. How sad. We must put more pressure upon the FDA to reclassify marijuana as a Scheduled II drug, one that has medicinal properties and value. The evidence of marijuana's medicinal value has now been proved, without a shadow of a doubt. If we can eventually get all 50 states to pass medical marijuana legislation Congress will heed the call. New York is still in the midst of passing medical marijuana legislation and Governor Spitzer is now on record as supporting such a bill as long as it is "properly structured." We shall see.
And how many of the Democratic candidates running for President support medical marijuana?? I can only think of two. Dennis Kucinich and Bill Richardson. Hillary, Obama, forget it. Obama would show some real vision and leadership if he came out in support of medical marijuana.
