As a regular reader of DailyKos and a highly motivated progressive, I very much enjoy reading this site (even when horrified by the content). Much of the time, I am satisfied with educating myself and knowing that this site reaches many thousands of people and is growing in influence. Sometimes, though, it isn't enough to read; sometimes I must act. Although I'm sure other articles have been written on this, I wanted to pass along a quick reminder of things we can all do when we get inspired to help make a change.
1) Make changes in your own life.
2) Communicate.
3) Donate money.
4) Volunteer.
1) Make changes in your own life.
It's true that the great majority of DK posts are about current events, national politics, humor, and personal stories that don't necessarily inspire personal change. Nevertheless, progressives are generally typified by folks who want to improve themselves. Therefore, be open to asking yourself how the information in DK posts might inspire you to lead a more healthy and fulfilling life.
2) Communicate.
Do not underestimate the power of words. The Right has done much damage to the country through their ability to manipulate and distort truth via language. By communicating clear and compelling progressive messages, you can make a real difference in correcting the GOP's rip in the fabric of reality.
a) Begin with family, friends, and coworkers. You don't have to be aggressive...just be clear and confident.
b) Write a letter to the editor. Yes, some people still read the newspaper.
c) Write a letter or make a call to your representative or senator. Often quick and easy to do, and can have a real impact. An actual letter delivered by mail is better than email, and you might be surprised at how good you feel when you call a congress critter and tell them what you think.
d) If so inclined, write to a larger community; start posting on DK, start your own blog, or get cracking on a book. There are many forums for the written word...find the one that's right for you.
The Rockridge Institute is a great place to begin learning how to really talk effectively about progressive ideas.
3) Donate money.
Love it or hate it, money still talks. If there is an organization or candidate that represents your interests, don't be shy in sending them a few bucks. Trust me, it all counts.
4) Volunteer.
When you are ready to step up to the big leagues of change, volunteer your time and skills. Not only will you help add your muscle to the Vast Left Wing Conspiracy, but volunteering in a meaningful cause is a proven way to improve your sense of well-being and happiness.
This is just a short list of the main ways to make a difference just to remind us that we all have the power to act in taking our country back.
