REPOSTED:I have not written a single diary entry on DailyKos since October 21, 2006. I only recall visiting the website less than five times in that span. But, after a long hiatus, I am posting this blog to urge one "common cause" for like-minded Americans --- IT IS TIME TO IMPEACH ATTORNEY GENERAL ALBERTO GONZALES!
I see no need to make this a prolonged diary entry, for little needs to be said to find reasoning for the impeachment of the Attorney General. The Washington Post article published today and the prevailing diary entry today on DailyKos shows that the Administration has total impudence and repugnance to our constitutional system of checks and balances.
Let's assume the President is correct in a practical sense --- that his appointment powers over the federal judiciary and SCOTUS will garner a legal victory. What is the only powers of Congress that will, under nearly all circumstances, be upheld? Impeachment and appropriations.
Though the President and Vice President are hovering in some of the lowest approval ratings in history, I do not believe there is sufficient reason or practicality in impeaching either of them. It will create more uncertainty, division, and political heat than the Democratically-controlled Congress is capable of handling this "green" into its term. Impeachment of the Attorney General, however, will bring a strong rebuke of the Executive Branch. It will bring an example of TRUE accountability that the American people voted for in November 2006. It will reassert the system of checks and balances and Congress's role, therein. And, it will set a precedent for all Presidents of ANY PARTY that the Constittion always provides remedies both final and just.
I have decided to contact my Congressman, Alan Mollohan, and urge him to at least consider the possibility. I urge you, Kossacks, to contact your members of the House and certain members of the house Judiciary Committee. NO Executive Branch can be permitted to exert excessive authority without Congressional balance.
