As some of you might know, my husband and I are avid paddlers. For the past two years, our summer vacation has been expedition kayaking in coastal British Columbia. Tomorrow, after a summer of work-related travel, we finally embark on our summer paddling vacation. Our boats will be weighted down with all the wonderful books suggested by fellow kossacks. Our destination: the Deer Group in Barkley Sound.
If you find a notable comment during the day, send it into topcomments at gmail dot com for inclusion! Anyone can submit comments! Remember to include your screenname, so we can credit you.
Barkley Sound, located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, is also home to the Broken Islands, a popular paddling destination in the Pacific Rim National Park. This park offers much for the outdoor enthusiast – those inclined to extended hiking trips in scenic locations might be interested in the formidable West Coast Trail.
We’ll arrive in the quaint fishing village of Bamfield via the MV Lady Rose (FYI: actually, it turns out that we were on the MV Frances Barkley, which is run by Lady Rose Marine). From there, we’ll have seven nights of paddling, remembering, of course, to Leave No Trace. We’re hoping to see whales, sea lions and seals, as well as a variety of birds, including eagles and ospreys.
So, fellow kossacks, where did you travel this summer?

Wyvern describes hell for Jerry Falwell in Ekaterin's diary .
From PerfectStormer:
Puffin sets it up, Elwood Dowd knocks it down, Stormy giggles uncontrollably...
From Sharoney:
In BarbinMD's diary "Cost effective" Support for the Troops, Grand Moff Texan --who never posts enough comments around here to satisfy me!--cuts through a troll's swaggering BS with admirable economy of language and pat208 gives the same RW troll a quick lesson on proving a negative while TruthofAngels responds along similar lines and finally pat208 swings the trap door of logic behind Mr. Macho Military Man
From Moody Loner:
I nominate this thread from On Impeachment: The War Won’t End While Bush Is President by Turkana.
CoolOnion reveals the truth about Bush
From sardonyx, who is being his usual loquacious self!:
PatsBard gives us startling information about the price of questioning the phone companies, which sets Spathiphyllum to marveling in MainSt's diary GBCW: I'm Going to See a Psychologist. (No, this is not your standard GBCW.)
cskendrick writes on power and happiness in a comment from kath25's powerful diary Feminisms: The Most Dangerous Kind of Misogynist. This is far from the only great comment in this diary; if you haven't stopped by, it's your loss...but doesn't need to continue being so.
Although some may disagree with the subject line, the body of IndyScott's comment is a distillation of a basic truth about this—or indeed any—election...but this one especially. It's from Ivan's diary It's on! Edwards assails "Corporate Democrats!"
I probably should have resisted any diary with the title Alabama banning sale of vibrators! Case goes to Supremes (by Eric Hopp, since I know you'll want the name of the guilty party), as if Dump Terry McAuliffe's opening comment on The constitutional issue in this case was warning enough. Krum chimes in with this estimate, and...okay, I'll stop now. You'll have to find the rest for yourself, if you really want to.
From Dreaming of Better Days:
Today I found this comment by our begone in kath25’s Feminism’s diary to be hysterical.
From RiaD:
Our own kath25 w/visions of the future.
MsSpentyouth w/ Turkish tea (NOT trollish tea) (well, I didn’t know how to make it & thought it was cool).
Moody Loner had this @c&j.
Gizmo59 in his own diary tonight: (just up now!!).
From asimbagirl:
Kyril sums up a generation's healthy skepticism in our gov't perfectly in this comment.
Pickle’s picks:
Frankenoid has an inspiring comment, as well as a hilarious one in last night’s Feminisms diary by kath25.
Also from Feminism’s (great diary and great discussion – clearly has engendered a number of Top Comments!), I completely agree with Unstable Isotope’s assessment of Phyllis Schlafly, as well as that provided by SallyCat.
I have to rec the graphic in Tigana’s comment in FrankFrink’s exposé about the Québec police, because of the picture!
I’m nominating Mash’s tip jar from his/her heartwrenching diary about Bangladesh.
