We face so many issues now as a nation, so many seemingly insurmountable problems. But one that strikes at the very core of who we are and who our kids are is what we eat. Food Politics and the champions of the cause are starting to get the word out, but still- to the average person- it seems like a small problem in a sea of problems.
It Is Not.
this study, covered in the AP today shows just what a concern it is.
Obesity Rates Climb in States By Kevin Freking- The Associated Press
Massachusetts ranked second leanest.
Washington - Loosen the belt buckle another notch: Obesity rates continued their climb in 31 states last year. No state showed a decline.
Mississippi became the first state to crack the 30 percent high for adult residents considered to be obese. West Virginia and Alabama are just slightly behind, according to the Trust for America's Health, a research group that focuses on disease prevention. (snip)
This year's report, for the first time, looked at rates of overweight children ages 10 to 17. The District of Columbia had the highest percentage - 22.8 percent.
The deadly combo of Processed food and Big-Agriculture have created and perpetuated a culture where we are getting sick from what we eat, and making our kids sick.
The way out is NOT as difficult as some would make it seem. Eat and buy Locally and seasonally, cut down on processed foods and soft drinks. (Americans drink an average of 54 gallons of soda a year) support small farms- read labels.
but most importantly- don't feel helpless, start somewhere, make some small change from today. even small changes when grouped together with millions of Americans with buying power- will make a huge difference.
and will make us less huge as well...
Assuming you have read this far- What change are you considering making in your own buying and eating habits today?
