Well me neither, Sen. Craig. As I often joke to my straight and gay friends, I've always been a "flaming hetrosexual."
But as usual, the Republicans just don't get it. Watching the Craig drama unfold yesterday, I was struck with some sadness that the primary issue the media and Craig focus on was the stark denial that Craig wasn't gay.
Let me rebut by saying: I don't care. I don't care whether Sen. Craig is gay or not. Because being gay is not a crime.
And Sen. Craig, whether you like it or not, you committed a crime.
That is what the focus should be here. Craig committed a criminal act. He plead guilty to it, for crying out loud. And now somehow he's trying to backtrack about with the stupid "anti-gay" defense. It's ridiculous on so many levels that I can't even comphrehend it.
Craig is guilty of a crime. Not only the crime he plead to, but the crime of stupidity. I mean, seriously, what U.S. Senator, who can afford the best legal protection possible, up and decides to plead guilty to a lesser offense without a lawyer? And doesn't tell his aides, his family, or anybody about the incident?
I'll tell you what kind of person does that...
either a really stupid one...
or one who is afraid of who he is as a person.
Sen. Craig, I say again...I don't care if you are gay. It would not be an issue to me if I was one of your constituents.
I would care about your criminal activity. I would care about your voting record as a staunch Republican Senator.
But gay? I wouldn't care.
My boss, who died earlier this year, was gay. I recall his memorial service wherein his boss who appointed him to the position told the story about how he was nervous accepting the position because he was gay. And his boss told him, "I don't care if you are purple. You are the right man for the job."
It is a sad day in America when the stigma still continues and is blown up by the media.
The issue isn't about being gay.
The issue is about the Senator's character.
End of story.
