I was just reading an article at cnn.com about the recent gay marriage ruling by a state court judge in Iowa. I have to say something. I am freakin' sick and tired of being told by people claiming to be Christians that any position more tolerant than outright discrimination against gays is an 'extremist' position. I am sick and tired of being trashed as a radical by people like Tom Coburn, who wants the death penalty to be used against "abortionists." And I am sick and tired about being lectured about the supposed 'immorality' of gays by the likes of Tom DeLay. These people don't represent the mainstream, and they don't represent the true 'Christian' position on gay rights and gay marriage. No doubt the Christionists will rant about 'activist judges.' And in the end, it still wont bother them that people are losing their houses, their jobs, and their health insurance.
One of my few complaints about the democratic presidential candidates is that they wont go ahead and say what they think: that gay marriage should be legalized. This is the one position that a large majority of democrats have, that they still wont admit to. I am freakin' sick of democrats being intimidated by right wing demogagues about how much it will hurt them politicaly if they support equal rights.
From the article:
Republican House Minority Leader Christopher Rants said the ruling illustrates the need for a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
"I can't believe this is happening in Iowa," Rants said. "I guarantee you there will be a vote on this issue come January," when the Legislature convenes.
It doesn't bother republicans that they have murdered one million people in the middle east. It doesn't bother them that they have made jhadism popular around the world. It doesn't bother them that they have bankrupted future generations. It doesn't bother them that people are losing their jobs and their health care. The only thing that angers them is gays getting married.
This is what the courts are suppose to do. They are suppose to enforce the constitution when the majority refuses to abide by the constitution. The law that was invalidated was repugnant to the equal protection clauses in both the Iowa and US constitutions. It was tantamount to tyranny by the majority. This isn't 'activist judges legislating from the bench.' This was a court limiting the ability of the government to take rights away. This isn't about denying 'rights' from the majority, this is about giving rights to a minority.
And I am sick and tired of being told how extreme I am for supporting basic human rights, and equal protection for all.
