I'm a somewhat recent arrival to Texas and it's fucking cold.
When extreme conditions come to the southern reaches of the country all the northerners talk about how we know nothing about extreme winter conditions - and they're right. I lived in Traverse City, MI previously and know what it's like to have the ground covered with snow and ice from October to May.
But this is South Texas. This should not be happening here.
Update: It turns out that was a slight overstatement, but the conditions are still pretty fierce statewide.

Something like this is a thing of beauty as long as you're not the one who has to drive in it. This is day two and while we're expecting warmer temperatures for tomorrow, it has been a crazy ride so far this week.
Nevertheless, my employer hasn't called and when they do I suspect it will only be to say that the office will not be open for business. San Antonio doesn't have the resources to deal with a freeze on any scale, and usually when the city gets the least bit of ice it descends into chaos.
KERRVILLE — Freezing rain and snow flurries made for dangerous driving across Central Texas on Tuesday. Three motorists were killed and hundreds of others became involuntary overnight guests far short of their destinations.
Schools, universities and some government buildings were closed throughout the region, where a winter storm warning remains in effect until noon today, with a chance of more snow, freezing rain and sleet.
Some 87 people spent the night at a Red Cross shelter here. Among the stranded were Greyhound bus passengers left in limbo after their driver dropped them off without explanation and departed, having reached the federal limit on work hours without rest.
Just more evidence, albeit anecdotal, that something very wrong is going on with the climate. Any other fellow South Texan Kossacks - post your pictures!

UPDATE: My employer called to say that the office is opening at noon, but that attendance today is 100% optional.
