Well, not in person but...on the cover of a free magazine sitting by the register.
My local healthfood store is a haven for Christian Fundamentalists. Why?
Follow me under the fold
I live in a VERY red part of Missouri. The healthfood store in question is in Cape Girardeau...hometown of Rush Limbaugh. As a matter of fact there is a controversy over the naming of our Federal Building... many want it to be called the Rush Limbaugh Federal Building (named not for radio Rush but his grandpa)...that is for another diary.
I have been trying to eat better and a friend suggested going to the healthfood store. I go once or twice a week and I have noticed a disturbing pattern. When I pull up to the parking lot there are a plethora of W bumperstickers and yellow ribbon magnets. I didn't think too much about it until today.
I drive an old car, here it doesn't pay to drive a newer car with progressive slogans...friends have had cars keyed, egged and their windows smashed. My hubby and I go into the store to purchase our items. Hubby wears his Democratic baseball cap...conversations cease. I look around and see the store is filled with women who look like they have been given a makeover by Tammy Faye Bakker. I overhear discussions of foodstuffs used by "Brother This" and "Sister That." I get to the register to pay. Lo and behold Mike Huckabee is staring at me from the cover of "Energy for Life" or some other magazine extolling the virtues of Godliness and Health.
My hubby said he was very uncomfortable being in there. We then began a discussion about the Christian Fundamentalist Health nuts as we drove away. I grew up with Grandparents who were Evangelical Christian. My paternal grandparents were healthfood crazy. They had a juicer over 40 years ago and ate unprocessed foods. Godliness and health were one. "Your body is a temple," "You are what you eat," were words my grandparents uttered frequently.
Mike Huckabee is someone my grandparents would love! He is a right wing Fundamentalist Christian healthy living nut. Mike Huckabee is everywhere.."The Daily Show with Jon Stewart", the bookstore, and now the healthfood store. Should we be concerned?
