So says the headline in my morning paper. Apparently, the Surrendercrats are going to reach out to Republican voters by doing and promoting what the Republicans want regarding abortion even though they know it's not the best thing for the country. Note the great success that John Kerry and the Democrats had by positioning themselves against gay marriage, the other moral value that Republicans have.
Democratic leaders say their party needs to de-emphasise the issue of abortion rights, concerned that Republicans have hurt the Democratic Party by portraying it as an uncompromising champion of abortion.
It could be a hit piece against Democrats, considering that it's from the New York Times and by Adam Nagourney, but other sources are reporting it too: Medical News Today, the LA Times, and here's a response to a Boston Globe article that I didn't spend the time to look up.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has encouraged former Indiana Rep. Tim Roemer, who has a "strong" antiabortion voting record, to run for chair of the Democratic National Committee, according to the Globe.
Pelosi, what the hell are you thinking?
"All Democrats are united around the idea that we should make abortion safe, legal and rare," Simon Rosenberg, president of the New Democrat Network, said, adding, "[W]e also have to be open to people who are pro-life."
All Democrats... except yourself.
Tim Roemer, an abortion foe who argues that the party cannot rebound from its losses in November unless it shows more tolerance on one of society's most emotional conflicts.
"Tolerance"? When someone is trying to take away your rights, and you're meekly suggesting that maybe, perhaps, it might not be the best idea to take away all of your rights right now, you're the one who needs to show tolerance?
I hate the way the Republicans keep framing the abortion issue and how the Democrats let them: the Democrats an "uncompromising champion of abortion." It's not and never was about being pro versus anti abortion, the issue has always been about whether or not abortion should be against the law, with a subtopic of whether women have a right to abortion. I happen to think abortion is wrong, but it should not be illegal and the option should be available to those who need it. I don't believe that everything I see as wrong should be against the law. They call me pro-abortion, because I sure as hell ain't what they call "pro-life". If pro-life meant what the words pro and life suggest it should mean, I bet it would include 99.99% of the "pro-abortion" side.

Hmm.. After all that diatribe, I'm still convinced that the Democrats should give up on fighting the Second Amendment. Go figure.
