I've had to ask myself many times since Saturday why Saddam was put to death when he was. We can all say it was according to the Iraqi law, but he was in the middle of a trial dealing with the gassing of Kurds in 1988, a time when he was allied with the U.S. against Iran in that regional war.
I have had to ask if his death was a way to silence him from letting the world know how he was once good friends with the Republicans of the Reagan administration and those ready to join the first Bush administration.
George W. Bush has made him out to be a Hitler, but he was killed by an action of the Old West -- at best a hanging, at worse a lynching. I only wish we could learn what cannot come out at trial.
Perhaps time will tell us what really happened in 1988, whether Saddam used U.S. weapons in the gas attacks and just what the Reagan/Bush administration was doing.
