I imagine the young Marine in "A Few Good Men" turning to the older, wiser, Lance Corporal; with that lost, worried look on his face; and asking "Hal...where’re we going?" Hal looks at the kid, kinda grunts disgustedly, and then breaks out into song:
we’re going smack - back - to Iraq - Jack
we’re going smack back to Iraq
pack your gear, put on your paint; this aint no time for the weak or faint
we’re go...ing...smack...back...to Iraq...Jack
we’re going smack back to Iraq
Now I suggest that everyone can sing along here, make up your own lyrics, your own tune and keep on singing ‘til we get somebody’s attention. You know...back in the Vietnam era, most every new song that came out - early ‘70’s I guess - you had to stop and wonder: what does this song have to say about stopping the war? Songs like "Peace Train" by Cat Stevens, or "Candles in the Rain" by Melanie, or "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
And you knew there were songs that were obviously against the war - songs by Bob Dylan, Country Joe and the Fish, Arlo Guthrie, and many others. But at one point you kind of expected every song to either be against the war, or not have any validity, no real point to it. So I’m suggesting it’s that time again. Time to pick up the six string and rant and rail and holler and cry about stopping this here war.
Everybody join in now...call your local radio station, ask ‘em if they’d consider playing some of the old protest songs and by golly...we could start a movement. You could even pick up the telephone and call your Congressman and start singing the song right there into the telephone.
