At what point to we label this a "rogue" administration?
The definition of rogue: no longer obedient, belonging, or accepted and hence not controllable or answerable; deviating, renegade: a rogue cop; a rogue union local.
Sound familiar? Before this year, the Bush administration had it's way. It had a compliant Congress and election wins in its pocket. It was pretty hard to call it a rogue administration when Congress failed to do its job.
Today things are different. Bush's party clearly lost. And he has admitted that. In particular, his war policies are a failure. It has been called a failure by the American people in polls and at the election booth.
Bush understands all of this. Remember the "mandate?" Remember the statement in which he said he had political capital, and he was going to use in? What does he have now? No victories. No political support.
Forget the claims of bipartisanship. The American people, a panel of our leading citizens and members of his own party are against his surge, better known as an escalation.
And what of this surge? Is this 20,000 new, or extra, troops? No, it's the same group, on their third or fourth tours. It's soldiers who get called back early. It's soldiers who have to stay another three to four months. Not only is the equipment worn out, the troops are worn out.
And where are these terrorists in Iraq? These people are terrorizing each other. We are not fighting a war against terror, we are policing a civil war, and both sides see us as a handy target.
But this rogue administration ignores all this.
It ignores Congress with signing statements.
It will ignore a non-binding resolution against the management of the war.
It ignores the FISA courts.
It ignores world opinion.
It ignores the constitution as it makes inane arguments against such common legal principles of habeus corpus.
It ignores professionals in the armed forces, firing those who disagree with it, making others accept policies that are wrongheaded.
We talk of courage in the country all the time. Where is the courage to take our country back? Where is this generation's Edward R. Murrow? Where is Dwight D. Eisenhower? FDR?
It there were ever a case for impeachment in the history of America, this is it.
When will we take our country back?
