Particulars beneath the fold!
Facebook, in it's latest incarnation, IMHO is far superior to most social networking sites such as MySpace (which loses MANY points for simply being a new wholly-owned entity of the Fox News Corp.!).
Facebook explains itself as follows:
About Facebook
Facebook is a social utility that helps people better understand the world around them. Facebook develops technologies that facilitate the spread of information through social networks allowing people to share information online the same way they do in the real world. Facebook is made up of many networks - individual schools, companies or regions - each of which are independent and closed off to non-affiliated users. To join Facebook, people can authenticate into a school or work network, or they can join a regional network. They can then create profiles to connect with friends, share interests, join groups, send messages, write notes and post photos.
Facebook launched in February 2004, and the website now has over 14 million registered users across over 40,000 regional, work, college and high school networks. According to comScore, Facebook is the seventh-most trafficked site on the web and is the number one photo-sharing site.
Facebook is a private company located in Palo Alto, California.
The Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is a young, savvy, entrepreneur, who recently turned down $750 MILLION for a buyout of his company, is right on the ball. He's a geek, like many of us, and the kid knows what he wants. Yahoo has offered him $900 million for the company. It's hot, here's CNN Money's take on him:
:NEW YORK (Fortune) -- When I tell Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg he seems like a natural CEO, he acts insulted. I guess at 22 it's just not the way he envisions himself. But Zuckerberg is a strategic thinker. Listening to him talk, it becomes apparent that the company he co-founded is a deeply considered enterprise. It's also more important than most observers realize. That's not just because it has already amassed almost 10 million members.
They seem rather impressed. I know I am! In a Forbes article on CNN Money, they expand upon what makes Facebook special, particularly it's innovative privacy controls:
The typical user can see less than half a percent of Facebook's total user profiles, Zuckerberg says. That is in stark contrast to MySpace, where everybody can basically see everybody else if they know where to look.
The CIA has a presence there, using it as a recruiting tool to lure in a younger, more technically proficient workforce. From my home town paper:
CIA trolls Facebook looking for recruitsBy LISA HOFFMANWASHINGTON -- Here's looking at you: The CIA now has its own Facebook group on the Web.No, the point of the spy agency's presence on the social networking site favored by 8 million mostly college-age kids is not to keep track of America's youths. Instead, it is a tactic to attract them to apply for the National Clandestine Service, which collects "human intelligence" covertly around the world.
So head on over, join up, and get connected! Look forward to seeing you all there!!
