For me, doing what is right ought to come before doing what is politically expedient, on every occassion where the choice between the two is clear.
That is why I completely endorse Cindy Sheehan's protest today disrupting the Democratic press conference to talk about domestic and political issues.
From The Raw Story (via CNN):
"While discussing the Democratic ethics legislation, Rep. Rahm Emanuel, Democratic Caucus chairman, was interrupted by anti-war protestors lead by Cindy Sheehan, a well-known activist whose son was killed in Iraq," CNN reports.
"We're here to let the Democrats know that the grass roots and the anti-war movement elected them to create change," declared Sheehan.
People are dying. Literally dying. Innocent Iraqis. American troops. Journalists. People. The WAR is the ISSUE. The rest is window dressing. For Democrats to focus elsewhere is to abdicate their responsibility.
Step up. Either own the war, and continue funding it. Or put a stop to it with every method in the Congressional arsenal. Cut funding. Vote to rescind the authoriziation for war. Hold hearings on the illegality of the run up to the war. Impeach the bastards.
It is that simple. Sheehan is courageous, and she is right. If Democrats duck this issue. Punt. Work on other issues to score political brownie points, in some insane game to avoid blame for "losing." Then they are culpable. Maybe not as culpable as BushCo. But culpable nonetheless. People are going to die tomorrow. And the next day. And we all know it is bullshit. It is time to end it. Politics completely aside.
