After the ridiculous flap over Obama's lack of a flag pin on his lapel, in which he was accused of being a domestic insurgent, and in which Fox News put this photo on its web site, what Obama should really wear on his lapel is a Constitution pin.
So should Edwards, Hillary, and all the other Democratic contenders for that matter.
After all, it is the Constitution to which elected officials swear an oath, not the flag. It is the Constitution that our current administration has shredded and disrespected, not the flag (although as a symbol of our nation, the flag is disrespected whenever the constitution is, so they've done that, too).
Granted, I want more than symbolism, and what I want in a candidate more than anything else is a dedication to restoring our Consitition, the Bill of Rights, and the separation of powers in every place they have been eroded in recent years. I'm not just looking for lapel pins, I'm looking for commitment.
But on the political scene, I can't imagine a better response to the flag pin flap than to wear a pin symbolizing the Constitution. It may not be an original idea, but I hope it is an idea taken up by any of our candidates who want to signal what it is that really matters.
