I can't stand when the Wingnuts tell me I'm not "supporting the troops" because I want to bring them home. Somehow, they've made protecting the troops--and caring about the troops--unpatriotic.
But what about when the Secretary of State patently rejects our troops, and wholly opposes the men and women who actually wear the uniform.
More below the fold...
Here is what General (4 stars!) Peter Pace had to say yesterday:
Senator McCain: "You said there's a possibility of the situation in Iraq evolving into civil war. Is that correct?"
General Pace: "I did say that, yes, sir."
Yikes.
And here is what General (again, 4 stars!) John P. Abizaid had to say yesterday:
"I believe that the sectarian violence is probably as bad as I've seen it, in Baghdad in particular, and that if not stopped, it is possible that Iraq could move towards civil war."
Yikes!
And then here's what Secretary Rice said today:
DAVID GREGORY: Is it a civil war in Iraq now?
SECRETARY RICE: The Iraqis have sectarian differences; there's no doubt about that.
GREGORY: A little bit more than sectarian differences, isn't it?
RICE: No, they have sectarian differences, and some of those are violent. But everything that Iraqi leaders and the Iraqi people -- not the people who are trying to cause failure there -- what the Iraqi people and their leaders are trying to do is to build a unified Iraq.
It's not civil war when 12.5 million people go out and vote for a government that bridges all of the sectarian groups. It's not civil war when the Iraqis are able to then, on the basis of that vote, form a unity government that is now trying to work both toward reconstruction and reconciliation. It's not civil war when you have a prime minister of Iraq, who is himself a Shia, who sits with the defense minister, who is a Sunni, with an interior minister who's a Shia, with a president who is Kurdish. That's not civil war.
So the commanders on the ground say "Civil War" and Condi says "No?"
How is that supporting the troops? Is she calling them liars? But doesn't that hurt their morale?
You know, I'm just surprise she didn't accuse them of cutting and running...
I'm too disgusted to keep going.
