I'm watching Southern California burn, and in the back of my head, I've got this little voice, ticking off the points...
Yet another disaster,
Driven by climate change,
Totally predictable,
All the National Guard that should be helping are off in Iraq,
Scary satellite photos,
Outbound roads jammed with evacuees,
... and, y'know, I'm having to tell that little voice that no, this is NOT like two years ago. This is NOT going to be another Katrina.
There is not going to be ANOTHER major US city destroyed. This is just sort of a flashback, it's not REALLY going to happen again. When Katrina was building up, the logical part of my head could see that New Orleans was going to end up underwater; this time, the logic says LA is NOT going to burn down.
Yes, tens of thousands of people are being displaced. Yes, some thousands of them might not have homes to go back to. But we aren't going to see another city just.. wiped out.
I want my mommy.
