I feel no sympathy for the American people. We get what we deserve. Here’s how we’ve "earned" what’s happening:
We re-elected George W. Bush. We knew exactly what we were getting. If we have "buyer’s remorse" (as polls show), we can’t really claim we were deceived. The president delivered exactly what he promised to deliver.
We allowed the destruction of New Orleans—Americans never show willingness to spend on infrastructure. And we are failing to rebuild it.
Our sons and daughters are dying in Iraq—and we cry crocodile tears. The people who most "support" the occupation do not enlist. The people who claim they want to end it continue to fund it.
We know that the war in Iraq is over oil—because Iraq is was one of many, many countries in the world ruled by vicious dictators. We picked Iraq because we want to continue driving SUVs. And if they are fueled by blood and oil, we don’t care.
In the 70s, we ridiculed President Carter for wearing a sweater and for suggesting that we reduce our use of oil. We chose instead to turn up our air conditioners, drive ever bigger vehicles, and send our young people to die. Oh, and we’re not willing to even pay for our wars—we just want to preserve our lazy comfort at home for free.
So, if the glaciers melt, and millions die in coastal cities, if Iran turns into a 20 year bloodbath, if we elect another president bent on destroying our unalienable rights...if we end up losing everything that America stood for...well, that was a choice. Too damn bad.
