A BIG error in the lead paragraph in David's Stout's article on the Bush SCHIP veto. (cross posted on the NYT Caucus Blog)
Stout's article starts:
President Bush vetoed the children’s health insurance bill today, as he had promised to do, setting the stage for more negotiations between the White House and Congress.
Where in Stout's article, pray tell, are there indications of negotiations on the bill?
Throughout the article, there are quotes from an obstinate White House, outraged Democratic members of Congress, and a "confident" Roy Blunt, who thinks he can sustain a veto. Nowhere, except in Trent Lott's quote at the end, are negotiations or comporomise mentioned. Lott, of course, would love to negotiate the Repbulicans off the hook for this one. But it's not his decision.
The NYT does a disserve by putting out the notion that negotiations are forthcoming when there is no real indication that they are. Negotiations got us this compromize bill. A heartless president vetoed it.
Hopefully, they will correct this before it gets too far.
