You can't make some of this stuff up.
In response to Foreign Service Officers in the State Department being a tad hesitant to serving in a war zone, GOP Presidential candidate Duncan Hunter fires off this missive to Condi Rice:
"If any Foreign Service Officers resist their directed assignment to Baghdad, I hope you will make it clear to all that there is no place in our government for public servants who refuse the more difficult assignments. America's security is based on our citizens who deploy to dangerous and difficult places in the world to preserve freedom. Our marines, soldiers, airmen, and sailors are making this sacrifice each and every day, as are many brave State Department personnel. If any Foreign Service Officers refuse orders to deploy to Iraq, I trust they will be immediately fired,"
But, then it gets better. Where does this fine example of GOP leadership want to look for new recruits to serve on these missions? Where else, our injured young servicepeople at Walter Reed Hospital!!!
From Political Radar:
Hunter said he's sure that the State Department could find plenty of volunteers among the wounded at Walter Reed and he's going to ask the President today to send State Department recruiters to Walter Reed.
"They are veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters and you can be sure that when called on for difficult assignments, they won’t convene a town meeting to protest," Hunter said in a paper statement today. "Especially for those whose mobility has been impaired by wounds, State Department positions, not only in Baghdad but around the world, will provide excellent jobs as well as availing our nation of their enormous talent."
Of course..it makes perfect sense. Aside from the inconvenient fact that many of these wounded have only a high school diploma, joined the armed services to pay for their college and have no experience in the diplomatic world at all. But hey, what's a little loss in expertise if the GOP can find someone who'll stay at their stinking desk when all hell breaks loose.
