Believe it or not, tomorrow is election day in many places around the country. You wouldn't know it here in San Francisco as Gavin Newsom is about to be reelected mayor. However, one race I will closely watch tomorrow is the race for Mayor of Canton, OH, where Democrats are working hard to unseat incumbent Janet Creighton. According to Jerid of the Buckeye State Blog, it will be close.
Along with Columbus, Canton is one of the few areas throughout the state the Ohio Democratic Party is concentrating their resources. The prize on the block, sending Republican Mayor Janet Creighton packing and taking the GOP's largest city. State Rep. Willian Healy is slated to take on the infamous ill-tempered Creighton down on Tuesday.
Creighton should sail to an easy re-election. However, her temper, recent racist remarks, and targeted status really make this race a wild card. I've seen no polling for this race, but I've heard repeatedly it's competitive. It's so competitive that Bob Bennett, chairman of the Ohio GOP, sent out a statewide call to arms last week calling all Ohio Republicans to the area to support Creighton. That's bad news , it shows that Creighton may be trailing going into election day. If Democrats win this race it's a massive upset to the Ohio Republican Party. Expect a tight race where anything could go.
This race is important because winning would serve to further build our bench and deny the Republicans even more territory in a state that will be fought hard for in next year's presidential and Congressional elections. We need to win here tomorrow to create a launching point for next year.
