Emotions are already running high about the current presidential election. I’ve heard some people say that if a Democrat becomes president, they will leave the country. With sincere concern, I would like to offer a word of advice to such people. Start working on getting your passport now, because the Bush administration has messed up the passport process so badly that it now takes about a year to get one. If you hurry, you may get your passport before Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Obama moves into the Oval Office.
Of course, not everyone foresees a Democratic landslide in November ’08, but one recent event makes it seem almost inevitable. George W. gave the Dems an unbelievable gift with his unconscionable veto of Children’s Health Care.
Make no mistake, there are mothers and fathers in all fifty states who cannot afford to get their children proper medical attention. No amount of dissembling, (the Washington word for bald-faced lying), can change the fact that the president and his stooges in the GOP are choosing to deny health care to children.
I’ve heard the convoluted arguments they offer for the veto. I’ve listened as Jo Bonner and other Republican Congressmen postured and prattled in an attempt to persuade us that denying health care to children is somehow another example of that famous compassionate conservatism. One of their lies is that the bi-partisan bill he vetoed is a "budget buster". They simply ignore the fact that it would be paid for by an increase in the tax on cigarettes. So, Mr. Bonner is really saying that instead of children’s health, he’d rather see that money just go up in smoke.
Just one thing, Mr. Bonner. Bush isn’t up for re-election. You are; and there are a lot of parents in Alabama’s First District.
