Americans should be shocked by the testimony of Alberto Gonzales today. If they aren't wearing Fox News glasses, they can see an Attorney General of the United States (a nonentity courtier of the regent) waving the bloody shirt of 9/11, having his lapdog Republican pals excuse him from having to testify under oath, and refusing to answer whether a President has the Constitutional authority to break a Congressionally-mandated law. Essentially, a man who puts his loyalty to his don above his loyalty to the Constitution. And this is the chief law-enforcement officer of the land.
But who could not have seen this coming? Why did Dems keep their powder dry on this guy, and then on Janice Rogers Brown and Priscilla Owens, and then Roberts, and then Alito ? See what you get? . . . . This.
A public officer perfectly content to allow the Constitution to be violated as long as it's his boss doing the violating. Roberts and Alito will do it too - I just hope the Dems don't pretend to be shocked when it happens. And keeps happening for the next 30 years.
It seems so long ago, but Gonzo was confirmed just one year ago right about now - Feb. 3, 2005. The vote was 60-36 for, with 4 no votes. Five Dems voted "for" - three refused to vote.
Here's the Dems who helped let this nonentity interpret the law for the United States:
Baucus: No Vote
Conrad: No Vote
Inyouye: No Vote
and the Flunky Five who voted Yea:
Lieberman, Nelson, Nelson, Pryor and Salazar. No real surprise there.
Thanks, guys, especially you "Joementum", who doesn't even have the excuse of hailing from a "Red State", like the rest.
[Update: And you know, thinking about it, I'm not sure I let the others off the hook. I know they're all up for election (except Salazar, the whimp, who isn't up until 2010). But what moderate, independent voter is going to remember Sen. Nelson's (either one's) vote on Gonzales when s/he pulls the lever this Fall? Independents are shown trending away from the Administration on these questions, right? So it seems that they're trying to capture a slice of the Right. So what right-wing activist is going to vote FOR Nelson (either one) this Fall because he voted FOR Gonzales? None. They've been trained to hate the Dems for being Dems. Although this Quisling Dems think that there's votes to be had there, there ain't. Why not stick with your base and with independents, in that case?
