I can't seem to strike out the word "rabid" in the title so I removed it, but it used to say "I'm not a rabid feminist, but", and I changed it as it was deemed offensive.
I read this story in the New York Times, and it really made me mad! Apparently, when people go to smoke on the ramps at halftime during Jets games, the men shout at all the women to take off their tops. While some exhibitionists comply and get a kick out of it, I can only imagine what it must be like for the ones who aren't into it. Am I crazy, or is this totally unacceptable?
A little more on the flip...
I think this was the worst part:
The scene played out for 20 minutes Sunday, as about 10 security guards in yellow jackets stood near by. After halftime, a guard said they were instructed to allow this behavior from the men because of freedom of speech laws. Women are warned against breaking indecent exposure laws.
This was a caption to a photo in "The Unofficial Halftime" slideshow. There was something in this description that reminded me of the treatment of rape victims in Saudi Arabia. Obviously, it is much less serious, but the women are warned to follow the law while the men are allowed to harrass because of "free speech" - what a crock!
This was another photo caption:
Several hundred men, three-deep in some areas, demanded that the few women in the gathering expose their breasts. When women didn't oblige, the men threw plastic beer bottles and spit as boos swept through the crowd.
So - anyway - I sent e-mail to the NFL saying they need to put a stop to it. You can do so here if you agree.
