So Bush v. Gore II went down today at the White House, kind of like Rocky II where they had to drag Gore out of retirement to take on Apollo Creed. And the contrast in statements from the two men couldn't have been more telling. Gore welcomed the opportunity to have an audience with the man who is still the most prominent world leader for 30 minutes on the subject of global warming. And he wouldn't let a harsh word enter the public record.
"It was a private meeting and I’m not going to say anything about it other than that it was very nice, very cordial," Mr. Gore said. "He was very gracious in setting up the meeting, and it was a very good and very substantive conversation. That’s all."
On the other hand, Bush, not even Bush but through a spokesman, said this:
Mr. Bush’s press secretary, Dana Perino, told reporters the president is willing to let bygones be bygones.
"This president does not harbor any resentments," she said. "He never has."
Oh really? The President isn't resentful over the way Al Gore didn't steal the White House from him? He doesn't harbor a grudge about Gore winning the popular vote and still being barred by the Supreme Court from serving the country?
Boy, that's the pinnacle of grace!
What the hell does Bush have to be resentful toward Al Gore about? Because he had the unmitigated nerve to run against him? Because he has this pesky way of being right on issue after issue over the last seven years?
This guy really thinks Al Gore owes him an apology or something, but he's going to be the bigger man by letting it go, but not before having his press secretary tell the world that's what he's doing.
Kind of says it all, don't you think?
