I'm listening to Randi Rhodes as I type and right now 164 Republicans have voted not to table this bill to impeach Cheney, only 68 Democrats have voted not to table. The vote is still open.
What the hell is happening here?
Randi thinks that either Republicans are sick of Cheney too or the more realistic reason is that they want to debate the topic and try to humiliate the Democrats in some form or anothers.
What do you think?
I will update when I can and urge others to do so, this is historic, at least it feels like it to me!
C-Span Live in case you don't have access to a TV.
UPDATE I: It's now 1:07 PM and only 5 Democrats have voted Nay to table impeachment and 168 Republicans have voted Nay as well.
According to someone on C-SPAN it is an attempt to make the Democrats look bad because of Pelosi's promise not to impeach and to stand of the way of any such efforts. That's something she shouldn't have promised, imo.
UPDATE II: Nay R - 183 D - 5 1:11 PM
C-SPAN Speaking to Kucinich about the resolution. What does he think of the votes to not table by Republicans?
"This is not a Democratic or Republican issue, it's about the constitution". He also has stated that it has nothing to do about his campaign.
UPDATE III - 11:22
Motion to refer to committee vote now
Thanks Oreo - My live stream to C-Span died. Damn work connections!
UPDATE IV - Cheney Impeachment - Toast.
Nevermind, I lost my C-Span and I'm new to this. It's going to the Judiciary Committee as stated below.
UPDATE V - "Impeachment Is (Sort Of) On The Table"
What followed was wrangling between Kucinich and Hoyer on whether to refer the resolution to the Judiciary Committee.
That set up more votes, as Democratic leaders continued to scramble to block Kucinich's impeachment proposal.
As of late afternoon, the voting continued, with the prospect that a limited impeachment debate might occur on the House floor. That's what Kucinich wants. That's what Hoyer is trying to avoid.
The Nation
Now Randi is talking about how the media is not paying any attention to this, the news is covering the writer's strike. How many here think Olbermann will be happy to bring it up? You know he will, but I won't hold my breath with most of the other news shows.
Ha, and now she's talking about how much fun it is to watch C-Span, I need to watch more.
House Republicans on Tuesday prevented Democratic leaders from blocking a resolution to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney.
The vote to table the privileged resolution, offered by Ohio Democrat Dennis Kucinch, began as a largely party-line vote to kill the measure, but Republicans developed a strategy to force Democrats to debate the resolution by supporting Kucinich. GOP leaders felt as though it was in their interest to debate the measure because it would make Democrats look bad.
After more than an hour of waiting for the vote to close, the motion to table the resolution failed by a vote of 162-251 after Democratic leaders failed to convince a group of liberal caucus members to side with them.
Republican lawmakers and aides credited Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) for coming up with the idea.
