They say a sucker is born every minute. I believe that not only is this maxim true, but also that the vast majority of these sheeple end up flocking to megachurches and donating oodles of money that ultimately is misused. Well, the jig is up, folks.
From the NY Times:
Senator Charles E. Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, is investigating six prominent evangelistic ministries to determine whether they have illegally used donations to finance opulent lifestyles.
Mr. Grassley said yesterday that he sent letters to the six Christian ministries on Monday requesting documents to answer a long list of questions about their compensation, housing allowances, checking and savings accounts, cars, airplanes and overseas trips. They have until Dec. 6 to respond.
Whoa, hold the phone. You mean to tell me that these so-called men of God are actually using these funds to finance trips and line their own bank accounts?! Nooo! How utterly shocking.
I have nothing against religion--it can be used to do a lot of good, but conversely, it can also be used to control people and to benefit the few at the expense of the many. And I also have problems when these religious leaders are advocating policies that would infringe on our liberties (and unfortunately are succeeding under the current administration). I don't know if I feel completely bad for the fools who buy into this crap, but I do think it's time to take some of the most egregious of these televangelists down and to expose them for the frauds they are.
P.S. I did a search to see if there have been any diaries on this topic but have come up with nothing. If this is not the case, please let me know and I'll take the diary down.
