Unsafe toys are flooding American markets at a record pace. In the past two months alone more than 13 million toys have been recalled. What is Nancy Nord, Chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), doing to prevent dangerous toys from reaching our children?
She’s telling Congress "No Thanks" to more money, more staff, and more authority!
Nord doesn't even agree with the most obvious provision of the legislation -- a long overdue ban on lead in children's toys. Lead, most commonly found in bright-colored paints, has been shown to cause developmental delays, impaired hearing and kidney damage, particularly in children.
We Need To Wake Up Washington And Get Congress To Demand Her Resignation
While 13 million toys have been recalled over the last two months, what has Nancy Nord being doing? She’s been flying around the world on the tab of the very industries she is supposed to be regulating!
In a scathing article in the Washington Post on Monday, Nord brushed aside criticism for taking trips sponsored by the fireworks industry and toy manufacturers to such places as New Orleans, Spain and a golf resort in Hilton Head.
Congress Watch: since 2002, Nord and her predecessor, Hal Stratton, took trips to China, Spain, San Francisco, New Orleans and a golf resort in Hilton Head, S.C. – paid for by the toy industry, fireworks interests and manufacturers of products ranging from space heaters to disinfectants
Instead of oversight, Nord is busy traveling the world and cozying up to manufacturers of these dangerous toys. The Chairperson of the Consumer Product Safety Commission should be working on keeping unsafe toys from ever reaching the hands of our children – not enabling the manufacturers who are putting unsafe products on America’s shelves at a record pace!
Nord’s CPSC might as well be called the "Can’t Protect the Safety of Children."
You can read more about how the CPSC is failing American consumers here at the People of Profits Campaign website. They have a great fact sheet on the dangers of foreign products and the CPSC.
Nord’s conduct is outrageous and it is time for a change!
Our children deserve to be protected from dangerous products. They deserve a holiday season free from presents that could hurt them. They deserve a CPSC Chairperson who is up to taking on this job. If Nancy Nord isn’t going to protect them, it’s time to replace her with someone who can!
