"Christians" receive a lot of bad commentary on this site, as well as other liberal blogs, and, in many cases, deservedly so. There are several reasons why "Christians," especially those who qualify themselves as Evangelicals, can and should be criticized.
First, political Evangelicals don't adhere to Biblical principles. According to the Bible, the Israelites attempted to seize Jesus and make him king numerous times, but the Son of God refused. He even said that his kingdom was "no part of this world." Also, secular historians have concluded that a tenent of early Christianity was political neutrality. If you believe that God is the key to humankind's redemption, why would you put faith in human rulers to solve problems?
Secondly, Evangelical mega-churches often focus on lucrative schemes and profit from in-house businesses. I live in Colorado Springs, a right-wing haven, and one of the mega churches here in town has a Starbucks in the lobby. In the Bible, however, Jesus threw out money changers who were profitting off of the people coming to serve at the temple. In addition, this specific church has made deals with book publishers to sell religiously-based materials at their bookstore for cheaper than the going rate. The pastors were then instructed to pimp these books to parishoners. This kind of profiteering is common, and completely contradicts the teachings of Jesus.
Finally, Christians are commanded in the Bible not to murder. And yet, the Evangelicals in this country, for the most part, support the war in Iraq, and George W. Bush's warmongering foreign policy. Jesus was a prophet of peace who would have despised the atrocities going on in our world today.
Ok...I'm done.
