Trent Lott is officially outta here.
Gov. Barbour is attempting to skirt Mississippi law by appointing a successor to serve until the November election. Let's hope that Attorney General Jim Hood will be able to enforce the Mississippi constitution and require a special election within 100 days as mandated.
Other disgusting quotes from the article (so you don't have to click on the link)
Lott, a neat-haired perfectionist with a penchant for order, rose to the pinnacle of Washington politics as Senate majority leader but was ousted from the post in 2002
Lott has not said what kind of job he'll pursue. There's widespread speculation that he might enter the lobbying business
Gee, ya think?
Saying farewell to Washington colleagues earlier in the day, Lott drew upon his modest background as the son of a Gulf Coast shipyard worker.
"We had a class motto that has lived with me since those years at Pascagoula High School in 1959. ... 'The glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time you fail,'" Lott said during a ceremony on the Senate floor in Washington.
OMG, gag me with a spoon.
Ok, here are the guys that are being floated as interim appointees:
US Rep Roger Wicker
According to the Washington Post, he voted 91.6% party line GOP.
Chip Pickering, who voted GOP ticket 92.0% of the time
or
Brent Marr, mayor of Gulfport, who, frankly has no chance because he is sort of, you know, sane. When his city was flooding, he said
When you send your law enforcement out to steal things, that's when you know you're in a different situation"
I'm not in agreement that the Gov should say F* You to the Constitution of Mississippi, or any constitution, for that matter, but I'm inclined to prefer Hizzoner, the Mayor of Gulfport.
Let's wait and see how it pans out.
