Until now, the Chicago Sun Times was set to win the Hillary Shill Race among mass media outlets during the primary campaign. It looked like Lynn Sweet iced the cake for the CST with her Hope Fund "revelations", published shortly after she had baked an earlier "expose" on Obama Transparency last month. And while she could honestly deny a mean-spirited accusation that the latter was wrtitten for her by someone else, she did not respond when asked what outside help she enjoyed in gathering this information.
Of course, not to be outdone, the Washington Post made a valiant attempt to steal a march with its front page Muslim Rumors story. But the uproar it caused forced the WP Ombudsman to explain that this bit of "reporting" was not a deliberate smear job. Since then, the Clinton campaign has been forced to cut out the media middleman and rely on others, like Senator Kerrey, and the awkward actions of its Iowa precinct supporters to keep that canard flying.
Lest it be outdone, the New York Times has stepped up to the plate. One could accept the fact that -- as the Clinton campaign is under increased pressure in Iowa -- the NYT provided Paul Krugman its platform to denigrate Obama on healthcare or as the "anti-change" candidate. Ignore the fact that Krugman had not always been so critical of Obama. But when the NYT published an article on Obama Votes Present almost at the same moment that the Clinton campaign has registered two web sites called Votingpresent.com and Votingpresent.org, the chutzpah quotient has been achieved to designate this once proud bearer of "All the news that's fit to print" a new motto.
Please add your suggested motto for the NYT in the comment section below.
