Being born into the human genome is the first big step to being human, but obviously thats not all there is to it. Having a big brain with the ability to learn and store massive amounts of info is also a big plus, but thats not all either.
Schwarzenegger in the 'The Terminator' had memory and could process his surroundings in real time, but was missing all that was human which is truly what made him so scary, the complete absence of remorse, quilt, mercy and other complex human emotions. As a matter of fact every scary movie and evil doer share one thing, a partial or total lack of vital human traits. Are there "Terminators" among us pretending to be human? Yes there are, and instead of being one dimensionally murderous, they are multidimensional self serving, doing and saying anything to get what they want without care or regret. We keep making the mistake of treating them normally and expecting normal reactions and being disappointed. Looking and acting human shouldn't be the only requirement for being president or holding public office.
The human brain is a marvel of evolution, with one very special ability called "the conscience". As our ancestors evolved and our brains became larger and more capable we developed complex emotions such as grief, empathy, remorse, happiness and love. These emotions not only add color to our lives but are essential for the conscience to exist. They regulate behavior and help us understand consequences, keep and protect family units, establish rules in the outer world and generally promote "human" survival. In fact the essence of the conscience is to help us "care" for our fellow human beings. It promotes tolerance, freedom and peace and may very well be responsible for civilization with its laws and goverment. What was happening on the inside of mankind was being reflected into the outer world and was becoming a force for good that helped all of mankind survive and prosper.
A vital part of maintaining our conscience is feedback. Dialog is not only good for communicating info but also for connecting our feelings. It establishes and maintains relationships, feedback modifies behavior, promotes understanding, limits power and hierarchy. But what happens if someone has no conscience, would feedback be possible, would they listen or even care? They not only would not care, but they would consciously subvert, cutoff and destroy any feedback from their fellow humans. Examples of an inability to accept feedback or tolerate change are dictatorial personality or organizations, free and fair elections, subversion and corruption of goverment, pathological control. It is just too hard and complicated for those with little or no conscience, they want a simpler world, one they can dominate and exploit for their own benefit with no consequences and few rules.
The real struggle all along humanities path has been between our self serving "me above all else" and caring about and sharing with our fellow humans? Are Democrats more attune to humanity and being human than Republicans? If so, lets not forget our roots.
